Synopsis

With the proliferation of virtualisation, everything-as-code and programmable networking technologies like SDN and NFV, information systems are more softwarised today than at any point in the history of computing. This shift towards softwarisation promotes flexibility, reduces configurational issues and eases automation, but equally introduces new security risks that did not exist previously. It also transforms existing risks in ways that challenge our current generation security controls and methods. This presentation introduces the concept of softwarisation and how it is impacting the way we do cyber security today, as well as the challenges it presents in the medium to long term. Methods for secure softwarisation will be discussed, with the aim of providing practical and common-sense advice for organisations and individuals to follow. This is an exciting topic that touches on trends at the forefront of computing and cyber security, with implications for the next ten plus years of information technology.
