Synopsis

Threat intelligence is commonly misunderstood and underutilised in enterprises, with the function, if it exists at all, being buried deep in the cyber team. Valuable insights are often ignored or forgotten about by the wider business, until there is an incident.

Properly positioned threat intelligence can benefit an entire organisation, beyond the cyber security space in which it typically operates.

We'll explore how threat intelligence can benefit not just the cyber security team, but act as an enterprise's supportive insider, embedded into the ecosystem of the entire business and its workforce. Most business units in the organisation can stand to benefit from threat intelligence, yet fail to understand it or take advantage.

Drawing upon military lessons from the field, we’ll propose how intelligence analysis in the corporate world can be elevated more directly to the CISO. The position of CISO draws parallels to that of a military general in regard to influence, leadership, and managing risks across the entire organisation. These parallels highlight how repositioning threat intelligence can benefit many business functions, including IT, GRC, legal, finance and more - including the executives themselves.

Benefits are wide-ranging but include:

  • Improved strategic decision-making and risk identification across multiple business units
  • Collaborative, not combative, relationship between CISO and C-suite peers
  • Evidence-based business cases for upgrading cyber defences
