Synopsis

Technology is transforming the way we work and interact with the world around us more than ever before. While people remain a major attack vector exploited by cybercriminals, they can also be the strongest defence on the front line if properly educated. Cybersecurity awareness, training, and education remain a challenging issue for many organisations and even entire countries. Typically, when an organisation faces a direct threat or needs to meet compliance requirements, they are motivated to implement effective security practices, often treating awareness as the final piece to complete the puzzle. But what happens when an individual experiences a threat? How can everyday users improve their security practices if they are unaware of the risks and solutions? What if there were a better way to transform employee and user behaviour, beyond waiting for Cybersecurity Awareness Month or annual training sessions? We must rethink how we approach and implement cybersecurity awareness programs if we are to truly change the security behaviour of everyday users, whether they are employees or students. This talk will present a cybersecurity behaviour model and demonstrate practical applications in the workplace that organisations can use, with a focus on improving motivation and reducing the perceived difficulty of security practices.
