Synopsis

In July 2024, one faulty software update caused over $10 Billion in losses to thousands of organisations around the world. Thousands of flights were cancelled, government agencies went offline, hospitals cancelled surgeries, and TV stations were unable to broadcast.

The Crowdstrike Falcon incident was like a widespread cyber-disaster had occurred, but no hackers were involved and no ransoms were demanded.

This presentation examines why some organisations were able to recover swiftly from the Crowdstrike Falcon incident whilst others suffered extended outages.

Rather than focusing on reactive disaster recovery processes, this presentation explores how more effective proactive business continuity planning could have reduced the harms suffered by organisations from this incident.

Participants will leave with a greater awareness of the differences between disaster recovery plans and business continuity planning, enabling their organisations to reduce their exposure to future disruptions.
